Successful Black Friday Rug Tent Sale 2010

The 3 Day Black Friday Rug Tent Sale we had last week went well. It started on Friday, 26th and ended Sunday, 28th. It was held from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

We got rugs for cleaning and repair. We also received several rugs for appraisal. We sold few Persian handmade Rugs and some Oriental Rugs. We really had some great deals on the Oriental Rugs since we didn't trick our customers by raising the prices and then putting 50% off the prices. What our customers found more amusing was that we let them take the rugs home and see how it looks risk free. "Are you sure we don't have to pay anything?" a customer said. And thankfully, all of them who took the Persian and Oriental Rugs home absolutely loved the rugs. They gave us a call telling us that they would keep them.

The Rug Tent Sale was good for us, because other than the sale, we had a lot of excitement and got to move some rugs around. We also did some rug repair beside the tent so our customers saw how fringes and selvages are repaired and secured.

Black Friday Rug sale: NOT DARK FOR US

We came to work on Friday Nov. 26 at 8:00 am to set up the tent for a 3-day rug tent sale. We were ready by 10:00 am as planned. We were busy on the Black Friday and yesterday. We sold several hand knotted Persian and oriental rugs. No area rugs (machine made rugs) were sold. We also received several rug cleaning and repair jobs from returning and new customers.

Today is Sunday and the last day of our 3-day sale. Up to now, we're plus. We have covered our expenses with some profits. We hope to have few more customers today to buy rugs or give us rug repair and cleaning. It is cold and a little windy today in Los Angeles. But it is beautiful and sunny with clear skies.

Thanksgiving and Rug Sale

Last night we had a great Thanksgiving at a family friend's house. The Turkey was very well cooked and followed up by different types of Persian food. We were there until 12:00 am. I couldn't have stayed longer because of the 3 Day Black Friday Rug Tent Sale we are having. Today I got to work at 7:30 am and started on the Rug Tent Sale. We assembled the tent and started putting the rugs outside. So far we sold a 9 x 12 handmade rug at 50% off to an old time customer. He must be really happy, because he truly got a deal. We are going to be open today until 6:00 pm and will be here Saturday and Sunday as well.

Black Friday Rug Sale

We worked up until 8:00 pm last night getting prepared for our Black Friday Rug Tent sale. For this year, we printed and distributed 5,000 full color postcards. We also had a press release and an e-mail campaign. I am also planning to make several personal phone calls tomorrow.

Today is the Thanksgiving day in the U.S. and we are invited to a friend's house for the turkey and plenty of Persian food. I will go to work from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm today to do some more preparation for the tent rug sale and then come back home to go to this friend's party. There will be I guess around 25 people there celebrating this event!

Finding The Right Area Rug

A customer just came in today. He wanted to buy an Area Rug, but had no clue what to buy. He knew what size he wanted and had an idea of the color, but he had no clue which rug was right for him. His flooring was dark brown and his couch was brown as well. I suggested that he buys a lighter brown rug. A rug that is too light will show dust and dirt very fast which requires the rug to be cleaned frequently. A rug that is too dark on a dark floor will not stand out. The best solution in a case like this is to go with a rug that has browns with some light colors mix in it. I showed him a piece we had which he really liked. He told me that it would match his room perfectly.

Proffessionally Cutting Your Oriental Rugs

One of the mind-boggling concepts in the rug business is cutting oriental handmade rugs. Although cutting a handmade rug can be crucial, professionally cutting it will not hurt it's beauty and it's value. We have cut many rugs for our customers. Their rugs either did not fit in the place they wanted or the rugs were damaged to the point that the healthiest way for the rug was just to cut them down while preserving as much of it as possible. While maintaining as much of the rug, we do our best to match the rug so it continues its symmetric design. We secure the selvages and all other loose parts of the rug so it does not open up. You can keep enjoying your beautiful rug for many more years after it is professionally cut and secured.

Nahavand Carpets and Rugs: A Unique Runner

In my previous post, I wrote about Nahavand carpets and rugs. It is rare to see a Nahavand runner. We have a wide and long Nahavand runner in our rug gallery here in Los Angeles. The size is 3' 5" x 17'. It is dated in Farsi (Persian) 1355 which equals 1976. Like other Nahavand rugs, it has semi-depressed warp and symmetrical knots. It has few geometrical medallions with birds, peacocks and horses.

Nahavand Rugs and carpets

Iran with a population of 75 million has 30 provinces (states). Hamedan is a big and ancient state in north west Iran with eight counties such as Asasabad, Bahar, Hamedan (capital of the province), Kabudarahang, Malayer, Nahavand, Razan, and Tuyserkan. The province of Hamedan has a population of 2,000,000. There are roughly 500 villages in Hamedan province which produce beautiful hand knotted rugs, each with its own design, color palettes, and sizes.

The city of Nahavand is located in south west Hamedan with a population of roughly 200,000 who speak Farsi (Persian) with Lori or Laki (a Kurdish dialect) accent. Nahavand has cold winters and ample supply of water which results in booming agriculture. Beautiful quality rugs are produced in Nahavand with cotton foundation and symmetrical knots. The wefts are cotton or wool. The background color is usually rust red or black and the pile is high and soft, made of local lamb’s wool. This is why Nahavand rugs are so durable.

The design of Nahavand rugs is mostly geometrical with a big central medallion, leaves, abstract animals and trees. There may be vases and birds in the designs as well. In general, the designs are very simple and in no way elaborate and detailed. The sizes are small and usually less than 7’ by 10’. Some runners are also made. One of the most common sizes of Nahavand rugs is 5’ x 10’. Runners are occasionally made. It is not unusual to see dated or inscribed rugs made in Nahavand. I am posting a picture of a 7' x 10' Nahavand rug here with the name of the weaver. The inscription reads: "Weaver Fatima". The looms are horizontal placed on the ground.

Since Nahavand rugs are village, rural and tribal carpets, you see so many irregularities and imperfections in them and that is the beauty of the rugs from Nahavand. Each piece is exclusive and unique.

Professionally Cleaning and Repairing Your Kilims

Kilims, also pronounced gelims or gilims, are what we call "Flat Weave" rugs. They are the type of rug with no pile. Killims are definitely unique pieces as they have multiple functionality. They can be put on the floor, hung on the wall, used as a table cover, a sofa cover, etc. They are very thin and light. There are two types of kilims. One which is one sided and another which is double sided meaning that the design is woven on both sides.

Since these Kilims are thinner than a regular oriental Persian rug, they need more care and maintenance. A person who owns a Kilim needs to make sure the fringes and selvages are in good condition. Kilims also need to be cleaned thoroughly and professionally.

Our company cleans and repairs many Kilims on daily bases. We know exactly how to take care of your Kilim so you can enjoy it on the floor, wall, sofa, table, etc. for many years.

Rug Cleaning and Repair Services in Los Angeles: The Extra Personal Care & Touch

One of the benefits of running a family business in Los Angeles is the connection I am able to make with my customers. As busy as I am, instead of sending a worker, I pick up every rug for cleaning, rug repair, stain removal, etc. myself and deal with every customer in person. On the days that I have meetings, I send my son to pick up the rugs. When I see the customer, I learn about them and connect with them. If they struggle with the payment, I try to work something out. When a rug of a customer needs extra care, I provide that at no charge. If a rug is not worth repairing or cleaning, I let the customer know. I do this because of my passion for rugs and my customers. If I send a worker, as if a robot, he will simply pick up that one rug for what ever the customer asks for, should it be cleaning or repair. But, I am able and willing to take those extra steps in order to provide a better and friendlier servicse. So if your oriental rug needs that extra personal care, I will meet with you personally and help you get the best rug cleaning, repair, stain removal, etc. services.

Shag Rugs and Professional Cleaning

We receive many shag rugs for cleaning on daily bases. Shag rugs require a completely different cleaning strategy. With their high pile, shag rugs are very hard to maintain. It is very hard to vacuum them and its long pile absorbs and stores more dust and dirt than typical oriental Persian rugs.

Still, many people buy them, mostly the younger generation, for of their simplicity and uniqueness. Enjoying these pieces come with responsibility. Even though their maintenance is harder, they still need to be well taken care of. This is where we come in. We professionalize in cleaning all types of shag rugs. We deep clean them and hand massage them to make sure all of the dust, dirt, food stain, etc., are out of the rug. We dry them naturally under the sun so they don't lose their fluffiness. Our customers are very satisfied with how we take care of their shag carpets.

Oriental and Persian Rugs

We cleaned up our rug gallery on Thursday. We removed a rack that had machine made rugs on it. We will not be getting more machine made rugs as we are putting our focus back on hand made rugs.
Persian and Oriental rugs are true investment and true art. They have a soul behind them and they are part of an artist's life. They take anywhere from a few months to a few years to be made where machine made rugs are made in matter of minutes and hours.
We decided that rather than selling machine made rugs which are almost the same hassle as selling handmade ones, we will put more focus on educating our customers about our handmade rugs. If a customer is going to buy a 4 x 6 rug for $145, why not buy a 100% natural die, hand spun wool, handwoven rug for $300? They get to enjoy the art of it, the naturalness of it, in addition to the fact that rather than throwing their $145 rug away after few years, they made an investment. Good quality handmade rugs appreciate in value, so a rug that you buy for $300, if taken care of properly, you can sell for more in a course of few years.

This is why we will not be ordering any more area rugs and will enjoy having handmade rugs in our gallery. We will however continue cleaning and repairing all types of rugs, including handmade rugs, machine made rugs, Flokati rugs, etc.

It is 4:45 pm. We have been working since 6:00 am. There are 5 pole workers and us helping people vote for the election in California. It has been a busy day and the turn out here has been good.

Rug gallery as a Polling Place in Los Angeles

It is election day in California. Like the last time (June 8, 2010), our rug gallery in Los Angeles is a polling place. I came to work 5 minutes before 6:00 am this morning. The pole personnel came right at 6:00 am and started to set up.

We had a good turn out of the early voters. Some were on the way to work and some were on the way home from their night work. They were all happy, smiling and teasing the pole workers!!

It is still early morning 8:45 am and everything is going very smoothly. I will write more on this later this afternoon.

We have not made any appointments for today with our customers who might be buying rugs or have rugs for cleaning and repair.
