Persian Rug, Antique Rug Cleaning and Repair Los Angeles

We receive many antique rugs for cleaning and repair from all over the country. This time, we received a pair of hand knotted antique Persian Farahan carpets sent to us by a very reputable rug collector from Miami, Florida. Both rugs had severe damages on the ends.

To do the repair, first we mad foundation, based on which we could tie the knots and re-weave the damaged areas. This was a very delicate job and only a master weaver who knows the construction, can match the design and color, can do the job. This requires a high level of expertise and long time practice.

We assigned one of our on-site master weavers to work on this project. He worked for almost three weeks to finish the complete restoration of one rug.

This rug looks absolutely beautiful now and we have started the repair of the second piece. We have to do the same by making the foundations on the loom, and re-weaving the damaged areas.

Making rugs is an art and preserving these objects of art is our passion. If you have a damaged rug, bring it to us and let us save it and bring it back to life. Our mission statement is to preserve as many rugs as we can.

Kashan Rug Cleanin, Kashan Rug Repair in Los Angeles

Is Rug ID Really Important?

A customer called and said she had a 4' x 6' rug for cleaning and wanted a quote and information on how we clean rugs. I spoke with her over the phone for a few minutes and gave answered her questions.   When she brought the rug in, I asked how much she knew about it and she said the only thing she knows is that her father who was a cultural attache of the American embassy in Tehran, had bought this rug in the 50's during his mission in Iran. I told her that this is a hand knotted Persian rug form the famous city of Kashan in the very famous province of Isfahan in central Iran. Its foundation is cotton and the pile is lamb's wool. There is a signature which reads  "Kashan, Saniee". There are some poems on the main borders form a very famous Iranian poet named Hafez who died in 1394, late 14th century. There are also some poems from another famous Iranian poet named Hatef Isfahani, died in 1783, late 18th century in all four corners. But, the ends and sides of this rug are damaged and this beautiful object of art should be repaired and preserved. Today's market value of this rug in good condition would be around $5,000. She said she had never noticed the writings in the rug and no one had ever brought that to her attention. She was excited to learn about the rug they had in the family for almost 60 years and was ready to do the full repair.

I believe rug ID is very important for us who are in the rug care business. At the same time, this can provide great information and service to our clients as well. Don't you feel the same way?

Rug Cleaning, Rug Dye Touch Up, Rug Repair in Los Angeles

We picked up 10 rugs from a client for cleaning and moth treatment a couple of weeks ago. We cleaned all of them and did the moth treatment. They were not sure about the repair of rugs and said they would stop by after we're done with the rugs to take a look at them. They came in 3 days ago and inspected each piece. They were very happy with the result of our professional deep cleaning and hand washing. They wanted us to repair those which needed the repair. To make them happy, I told them that we do patching and color match of one of the pieces free of charge and they loved this free offer.

This Hamedan rug had an old patch which looked faded and ugly. After we did the repair of the side bindings by one of on-site repair personnel, we did the color match and the look and appearance of the rug was improved and way better than what it was.

There was also a bad hole on another part of the same rug. We patched it with a somehow similar type of patch and the outcome was good as you can see in the above pictures. This was a free of charge service for a customer who gave us 10 rugs and they deserved to receive this service.

Karastan Rug Repair in Los Angeles

We picked up a big 10' x 14' Karastan rug for cleaning and repair from a client here in Los Angeles two weeks ago. Part of the top part of this rug was rotten and was severely damaged. We professionally wet washed it and gave it a full bath.

The owner of this rug did not want to spend a lot of money restoring it. She said just make it look better than what it looks now. Therefore we patched it with another 2' x 4' Karastan piece we had in our inventory.

The patch was secured from the back by sewing it from the inside construction. Then we put and glued special type of canvas strap on the back for extra support. We sewed back the fringes and now this severely damaged Karastan rug looks much nicer than it looked prior to our repair.

Why Rug Ideas? Why Los Angeles Rug Cleaning?

Rug is not our job. Rug is not our profession. Rug is our passion. Our mission statement is to save as many rugs as we can. Rugs became our passion in 1953.

Why should a customer choose us over our colleagues? There are several reasons:

1- We pay attention to details. We receive many rugs for cleaning, repair, stain removal, or appraisal every day. Each client has a file and we take care of each rug individually and inspect and supervise it from the beginning to the end of our process.
2- We love to do custom jobs. We get out of our comfort zone and do what others don't. We love to do jobs others do not bother doing. A customer bought few runners for her stairways from us. One of the runners should be installed on a curly landing connecting two sets of stairways. We cut them and did the bindings by hand. She loved the custom job we did for her.
Another customer had a rug she did not like because of the long lines of white pile. We sheared those lines and she loved the rug again.

3- We take care of other types of textiles besides rugs. A customer had a severely damaged needlepoint she loved. We cleaned it professionally and repaired it. The piece was very small, but the job was very big and time consuming.
4- We have master weavers on site and supervise the repair. Sometimes we may have to dye yarns for our repair jobs. We gladly do this.

5- We share our information and rug knowledge with our clients. When we see their rugs, we tell them their origins, constructions, ages, and today's market value of their rugs. Our clients love to receive information on their rugs.

Rug Cleaning Is Not Do It Yourself At Home!

A young couple walked in to our rug store in tears. They had received a hand knotted Persian Kashan carpet as a wedding gift from the wife's parent. It became dirt after a while and they wanted to do some artwork and washed it at home. It bled and all the red dye migrated to the white/ivory ares of the rug. They panicked and called a friend whom they thought new about rugs. She recommended using yogurt which she thought would remove the bleeding. It made it worse.
The stain on the lower right is the yogurt artwork

We dusted the rug first, and washed it professionally with wool shampoo, rinsed and dried it properly. We also did some stain removal work and the outcome came out pretty good. When they came in to pick up the rug, the husband said now this rug looks better than ever before. They left our store smiling.

Rug cleaning is a professional job. It is not do it yourself at home. Leave it to professionals and do what you do best.

Saturday at Rug Ideas, Los Angeles

We worked from 12:00 to 6:00 pm on Saturday. We had a couple of cleaned rug deliveries. A client called in and wanted a delivery of a 10' x 14' rug pad. She also wanted rug protectant on one of her rugs which we did. Rug protector is an odorless, colorless, non-toxic solution that we spray on the front/face of rugs. This fabric protectant protects rugs against spills, stains and soil. It does not leave a greasy residue on the rugs at all and unlike Sctotchgard, it does not turn the rugs yellow.

We had sold a couple of rugs which were hanging on the walls of our store last week; so we hung few rugs on the walls. We use strong industrial clips to hang rugs on the racks/bars on our walls.

The rug on the right is a hand knotted 8' x 11' Persian rug with overall/floral design from the famous city of Mashad in north east Iran. It is a matter of taste and preference. Some of our clients like this type of traditional and classic design with medallions, while some like the diamond shape medallions in the center of rugs. Some clients like classic and traditional designs while others prefer modern and contemporary designs.

The rug in the middle is an 8' x 10' hand knotted Persian Lilian (Lilihan) rug. This design has four corners and a central medallion. This is a collectible piece. The rug on the right is called shag and has high piles of longer than an inch. It gives you a good mattress type of cushioning. It has almost no design and this is what many of our clients like. We sell and clean shag rugs.

Rug Ideas Los Angeles: A Nice Testimonial

A testimonial we received:

Today my husband & I made a visit to Dr. Kay's rug store on La Cienega. It turned out to be a very happy & rewarding experience. We spent over an hour in the store, Dr. Kay & his son Cash pulled out rug after rug with nary a complaint (its a lot of work pulling out those rugs & displaying them on the floor)

We looked at a huge variety of rugs, and in particular our eye was drawn to the array of  beautiful Persian rugs Dr. Kay carries. Absolutely beautiful, handmade, handwoven, unique designs, I could go on and on, such is the extreme pleasure I get as I sit here writing & looking at the second hand Persian rug we purchased today, woven  some 50 years ago, I can only imagine the secrets it holds.

It is exquisite & brightens up our apartment no end.

Highly recommended rug store in our book, everything is fairly priced, don't be afraid to bargain & the personal service is as good as it gets.

We are two very happy customers and this is actually our second purchase from Dr. Kay's. We bought a rug some 4 years ago from him & it's still going strong. Not a Persian that time but it is standing the test of time & still looks great & feels good underfoot.

As the dude says "the rug really ties the room together!"

Rug Care and Maintenance in Los Angeles

There was a tag on the back of a rug we professionally cleaned last week. It had interesting care, cleaning, and maintenance tips that I quote here:

Vacuum regularly. Clean spills immediately by blotting with a cloth or sponge. Avoid use in damp areas. Do not over wet tufted rugs with liquids. Folding will cause backing to become brittle and deteriorate. Do not use a beater bar vacuum on rug. professional cleaning methods are recommended. We strongly recommend use of padding beneath your rug for your safety, and for the protection of the rug and your floor.

These simple tips help you keep your Oriental, or area rugs machine made carpets clean and in good condition and will save you money and hassle you may face.

Clean rugs help you have cleaner rooms and homes which directly affect your health. If you have dirty or damaged rugs, call us for a free quote and pick up. If you're out of Los Angeles or out of state of California, we have easy solutions for you as well. Call us at 310-770-9085
