Persian Kashan Rug, Iranian Kashan Carpet repair in Los Angeles

A client brought in an old Persian Kashan rug they had in the family. The rug was bought by his father decades ago in Iran. It was dirty and dusty, and needed professional deep cleaning. Part of the fringes at one end was also damaged.

We hand washed the rug by sending it through our 10-step process. Our professional deep and hand washing process which is different from others works in the following way:

-First we inspect incoming rugs to determine the best way to clean/restore them, and then we take digital photos (before & after). Rugs are dusted to loosen/remove the dirt, and dust.
-It then goes for shampooing, using special enzymes that are non-toxic.
-A thorough water bath rinsing follows and the final step is natural drying.

Our technique is superior to others as we do not do dry, steam, or surface cleaning like wall-wall carpet cleaners.

After the cleaning, one of our master repair personnel on site did the re-fringing and repair of the damaged end. He had to find the right kind of cotton thread as regards with the color, thickness, and the construction to match with the other parts of the fringe at the same end.

The result of the repair came out very good and we cannot wait to show the rug to our client. If you have a damaged rug, bring it in or send us a couple of pictures for free consultation and a quote. You can also call in to discuss the options. In many cases, there maybe more than one option for the repair.

Down Sizing Rugs, Down Sizing Kilims in Los Angeles

A client came in a couple of weeks ago looking for a kilim (flat weave) runner. We had several kilims and three kilim runners. She did not like any of them and said she has a kilim which is wide and does not fit the hallway in the house. I told her to bring in the kilim next time she is in the neighborhood so we can take a look at it. I told her that we might be able to down size it to fit the hallway.
Few days ago, she stopped by the kilim runner. The width of the runner was 4' 11" and she wanted this to become 3' 7" with symmetrical borders. We down-sized the runner to her ideal width and she was very happy with the result of our job. What we did was not cutting the borders. We sewed the borders onto the back of the kilim so if in the future she changes her mind and wants to have a wider runner, we could undo the down sizing of the runner and make it wider.

If you have a rug or kilim and would like to down size it, bring it to us for consultation. We can make it to your ideal size.

Salt Bags, Salt Bag Rugs and Carpets Are Tribal Objects of Art

Salt Bags Are Tribal Objects of Art. There are many commodities that have substitutes; salt is not one of them. Salt is an essential part of tribal life in Central Asia and Iran. Salt bags in Farsi, Namakdan, are decorative and utilitarian bags, not made for the market. They are made of kilims, flat weaves or rugs, or sometimes combination of the two. Some salt bags are made of damaged rugs or kilims as tribal life has zero tolerance for waste. To keep the salt inside, in annual migration, use, or storage, salt bags are tightly and finely woven. A salt bag has a very unique shape; a wide square or rectangular boday and a long, narrow neck to keep the slat (rock or powder) inside. In addition to salt, nuts, dried fruits, seeds, etc can be stored in salt bags. Many collectors buy and collect salt bags. It is fun to collect and sometimes to show them to guests as these bags are conversational pieces!

Bakhtiar Bakhtiari Carpets and Rugs

Antique Bakhtiari garden carpet

The craftsmen of the Bakhtiari rug come from the Bakhtiari Tribe, located in the Chahar Mahal region of Iran. Here, the weavers drew their pattern and color inspiration from the elegant gardens of the Khans. The rugs featured garden patterns that were intricately decorated with flowers, birds, other animals, and Trees of Life. By the late 19th century, the rug industry was flourishing in the Chahar Mahal region and these Bahktiari artisans were provided with the best available materials.

In addition to their opulent colors (known to be among the brightest), Bahktiari-style rugs can be distinguished by their teeming design patterns that are mostly geometric and sometimes, semi-geometric. Their famous paneled design, in which each compartment presents a different motif and color from each neighboring compartment, has been popularly copied by China, Pakistan, India, and other areas of Iran. The compartments can be square, diamond, or hexagonal in shape. Finally, Bakhtiari-style rugs have another branch of rugs called, “Bibibaff.” These are considered among the finest and most traditional of the Chahar Mahal region because they are only made by women.

We did not want to return the cleaned carpet without any cosmetic repair. We offered to patch the rug and she liked the idea.

The result was very good compared with the little investment she made and she was very happy with the new look of her Karastan rug.

If you have a damaged rug, call us or send us a couple of pictures from the damaged areas. We will have few affordable repair or patch options for you.

Los Angeles Rug Cleaning: Feeling the Difference!

Our 10-step rug cleaning process is different from others. It starts with inspection of the rug followed by taking many before cleaning pictures. Dusting to make sure all the dust, dirt, and dry soil is out of the rug is the next step. Dust and water becomes mud and you don't want that to happen to your rug. Using WoolSafe tested and approved rug shampoo is what comes next. We also sanitize and deodorize the rug for better results. Then comes detailing and cleaning of the end fringes. Extracting water and drying the rug properly is very important issue which we care about. This prevents mold/mildew from developing. Rug should be completely dry before it can be delivered or picked up.

Final step is inspection and taking after cleaning pictures. If repair is needed, then we start the process of choosing the method, yarn, and assigning one of our repair personnel to start the work.

We are the first and the only Certified Master Rug Cleaner in Los Angeles.

Rug Carpet Re-fringing in Los Angeles

We received a very fine silk foundation hand knotted rug with damages on both ends and missing/rotten fringes. This rug was shipped to us from out of town by a colleague for repair and restoration of the fringes at both ends.
We assigned one of our master weavers to take care of the job. The first step was finding the right type of silk threads/yarn with the same thickness, construction and color.
The next step was to re-weaving the new silk fringing into the construction and body of the rug. The concentration of the new fringes should math the original fringes. Each cluster of fringe had 8 threads/fringes in it and we matched this.

Then we had to cut the length of newly installed/implanted fringes to match the length of the original fringes.
The result was very good and almost no one can tell if this nice rug had ever damages on the fringes. So if you have a rug which had damaged fringes at the ends, send us a couple of pictures for a quote for a professional repair or bring it in for a free inspection and repair estimate.

Rug Down-Sizing, Aubusson Rugs in Los Angeles

We received this big Aubusson rug from a client who wanted to down-size it from 12' x 17' to 10' 6" x 11' 8". We measured the Aubusson rug first and marked the ideal size with blue tape and then cut it. Before we cut a rug, kilim, tapestry or an Aubusson rug, we measure it with care several times. We do not want just to cut it and then realize that we made a mistake.

One of our master weavers then started to work on sewing and stitching the pieces together. Kash, our operations manager supervised the whole process very carefully to make sure nothing goes wrong. After four big pieces of this Aubusson rug were washed professionally, we stitched them together, and matched the design. The outcome came out great. For extra protection, we sewed canvas straps on the back on the joint/stitch lines.

Below, I am posting the picture of the complete job. The size is the exact size our client wanted. She was so happy at the time of pick up that she hugged me and Kash twice and left our store with a big smile on her face.
If you have a rug, hand made or machine made, kilim, Aubusson rug, or any other move-able rug/carpet and you want to down-size it for any reason, consult with us and let us do the job job. This is what we're good at!

Rug Repair at Los Angeles Rug Cleaning

Many of our clients who give us their rugs for professional cleaning also ask for rug repair. In some cases they like us to down size their rugs. This maybe because of moving to a smaller home or some parts of the rug is damaged or some other reasons maybe involved.

In this particular case, our client wanted us to make a runner out of his carpet. We first cut the runner and then did the bindings on the sides by hand by one of our repair staff on site. For the bindings and the repair we use New Zealand lamb's wool. In some cases for the repair, we dye the yarn to get the color of our desire if we cannot find the right color in our yarn inventory.

NCIS LA at Rug Ideas For Film Shooting. LL Cool J Was Was Here

NCIS crew and actors were with us for three days on December 2, 3, and 4, 2013 for a film shooting. They changed the signs of the store as well as the decorations. They removed/covered all the modern/contemporary rugs and replaced them with classic/traditional pieces.

In any instances I could, I talked to them about how rugs are made and tried to change how they look at rugs and how they should see them as objects of art.
The surrounding streets and blocks were closed by the police.

 I greeted LL Cool J.

In his filming breaks in our store, I had lengthy conversation with LL Cool J on rugs, art, history, and culture.

Eric Olsen was one of the other actors who was with us all day on the film shooting day.
The front windows of the store were covered with films/gels to prevent light reflections from the street.
