Members of the Textile Museum Associates of Southern California held an annual event this past weekend in beautiful Palos Verdes. Rugs, textiles and ethnically inspired compatible items of personal adornment were brought to show and sell to other members and guests. (TMA/SC) is a non-profit organization founded in 1985 that presents monthly educational programs, discussions, field trips, and special events focused on handmade textiles, weavings, persian/oriental carpets and costumes from around the world.
We brought a number of Persian and Oriental rugs with us as well as some special items including hand knotted saddle bags and salt/grain bags. It was great sharing the stories of our rugs and bags to the other members in attendance. We were also able to give our expertise on maintenance, repair and cleaning of rugs which is our specialty.
There was a 'show and tell' segment of the picnic where members could display and talk about some great rugs and textiles that have been acquired during their travels. Some were over 100 years old and there was even a woven gauze piece that was approximately 1,000 years old.
A great time was had by all; members brought food for a potluck to be enjoyed on a beautiful sunny day. The information shared about the displayed pieces gave everybody more insight into the history/culture that the rugs hold. Maybe you have a piece at home that holds some history and just don't know about it yet. Appraisals are another service we offer to help owners learn about the antiquity and worth of their rugs. So feel free to bring them in to us; there just might be a story to tell.

I wish I could have went to that, it looks like there were a lot of amazing rugs and carpets to see!
It would have been interesting to see that 1,000 year old piece! How neat to think about how old something like that is and how it's managed to survive all of these years.
Will there be another one of these soon? Or is it a yearly thing?
My friend has some rugs that she would like appraised, I will have to forward your information to her.
