Balouch rugs are made mostly in the province of Khorassan in north east Iran. They are entry level rugs for those who want to start buying/collecting rugs. Balouch rugs have the following characteristics:
- They are small and below the size of 5' x 8'. Some people refer to them as prayer rugs.
- Tribal pieces with geometric designs and stylized animals and birds. There are some elements of Turkmen rug designs in them.
- Limited color palettes with dark colors and corrosive brown dye.
- Low knot density.
- Affordable prices starting from a couple of hundred dollars.
- Wool foundation in older pieces with goat black hair selvages and bindings on the sides.
- Asymmetrical knots and single wefted.
- Made on horizontal ground looms.
- Soft handle and easily pliable.
