Bokhara Repair

At Rug Ideas, we see new rugs every day that need cleaning, repair or both. But what may surprise people is that we often have other rug stores/dealers as clients who often need repair on their rugs. And when they need a repair they contact us as we have over a half century of expertise in dealing with expert repairs of all types of rugs. Last week one of our rug dealer clients came in with a Bokhara rug that needed some attention. Taker a look below:

As you can see the ends were unraveling which is not only an eyesore but also meant that if it continued it could possibly unravel into the design of the rug. Luckily the owner decided to take action before that happened. We are well known in the community for outstanding repair work and we have a great team of master weavers to repair the myriad of problems that a rug may encounter. He knew the rug would be in good hands with us, and we proceeded with the repairs right away. All the work was done by hand, and the securing of the ends came out great. Take a look below at the results:

This rug is now in great condition; look wise as well as structurally sound. If you have a rug that is doing some unraveling as well, bring it in to Rug Ideas where we can stop the damage and get it back to it's former beauty!

Pakistani Rugs

The surrounding countries around Pakistan have had a tremendous impact on Pakistan itself, and the result in the Pakistan rug industry has been a blend of Persian, Caucasian, Turkish and Turkoman designs. When Pakistan was separated from India after World War II, the weaving industry went into a decline. Recent government support has resulted in a thriving industry for the country and the Oriental Rugs being produced there are increasingly more diverse and higher in quality.
There are two major weaving areas in Pakistan. To the East around the city of Lahore, Persian designs are woven in traditional colors, along with the so called Pakistan Bokharas in traditional Turkoman designs. There is much experimentation with vegetable dyes and antique wash. To the north close to the Afghanistan border at Peshawar, are woven a variety of Persian, Afghan and Caucasian design carpets with a more primitive look, having soft vegetable dyes antique colors.

The Caucasus and Central Asia

Two areas formerly in the Soviet Union are traditionally noted for the beautiful rugs they produce: Turkestan in Central Asia and the Caucasian Mountains. While this centuries old tradition was interrupted when the Communist Party took control, it was later encouraged in government factories in both areas. Now, with the fall of Communism, weaving is returning to a cottage industry.
Rugs from the Caucasus typically have bright colors and strong geometric patterns which sometimes feature both animal and human figures. The rugs being made today maintain the traditional patterns and colors and continue to be high in quality.
Turkestan is noteable for its production of the ancient "Bokhara" patterns. The name "Bokhara" for modern Pakistani rugs derives from the name of the railway station where these rugs were collected and shipped to the West. These rugs are traditionally a deep shade of red with a repeating pattern of guls (polygons) in dark blue, black or brown with white accents.

Bokhara Cleaning/Repair - The Works

This week a lot of TLC went into a Handknotted Bokhara Design Rug, which a customer brought in after having a great experience with us cleaning & repairing a Sarouk that had been in her family. The Afghan Bokhara design rug had seen better days; it had not been cleaned in over 6 years and the ends and sides were started to fall apart. Take a look below:
As you can see the rug was in dire need of attention, and Rug Ideas was the absolute best place the customer could have taken it. First we did a deep cleaning of the rug to take of of all the dust, dirt & stains that had accumulated over the last 6 years. Once it was done with cleaning it was sanitized and deodorized, which was a great time to now proceed with the repairs. All 4 sides were to be repaired by the hands of one  of our master weavers. All the work was done by hand and we took great care to make sure the yarn colors used matched the rug perfectly so we could get a great finished repair. Take a look at how the cleaning/repair came out below:
The deep cleaning brought back the red vibrancy it once had and just leaps out now. The ends were secured so that no more damage was done to the design of the rug and the selvages(sides) were done perfectly in a great complementary red. This Bokhara now has a new lease on life and our customer is ecstatic with the results and cannot wait to put it back down in her home. If you have a rug that needs the complete Rug Ideas cleaning/repair package contact us anytime so we can step you through your options to bring back the life of your rug!
