Tough Times Will Not Stay Forever: The Rug Market Will Improve

Yesterday our repairman and today our dye specialist expressed their serious concerns about the slow rug market. I told them I know it is difficult these days to tackle the expenses, but being worried does not solve any problem. We have to work harder in slow rug market and never lose hope. We also have to work smarter. Tough times will not stay forever. There are many customers who can afford to buy rugs or to pay for the related services, but they are not mentally ready to spend. The customers' confidence is low and as soon as this confidence is restored, they will start spending.

How We Thrive in a Bad Rug Market in Los Angeles

Let me share some secrets with you, but please do not read it loud. I do not want everybody to know what I am doing to make it in this difficult time!

1-As a courtesy when we clean a customer's rug, we do minor fringe or selvage repairs at no charge.
2-We go extra miles and get out of our comfort box to make our customers happy. We do more for less. This pays off.
3- We finance some of our customers. This means if they want to buy a rug and cannot afford it, we ask them to buy the rug if they like it and pay us by 2-3 payments. This has been working with us.
4-We try to learn more about rugs and share our knowledge with our customers. They appreciate this.
5- Our hours is flexible. If our customers want to stop by and cannot make it, we come to work earlier or leave later. We are open seven-days a week. Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00 pm. When needed we stretch our hours for the convenience of our customers. They like this kind of personalized service.

Obama Rug, Obama Carpet?!

Several visitors found my rug blog when they searched for "Obama Rug"! I had a post few weeks ago on if by coming President Obama to the office the rug market gets any better. Why should people search for "Obama Rug"? Is it just out of curiosity?

The former president George Bush joked while ago that the first decision of any new president is what kind of carpet he wants. So what kind of rug did Barack Obama choose? I searched for this and I found out that the new president did not change his desk and his Oval Office's rug. When there are so many other crucial and important matters, why should a new president care about the rug in his office unless he does not go by priorities!

Rug Market Will Never Die!

Rug Market Will Never Die

Because of the present world economic situation, some rug dealers or those who are somehow involved in one of the many aspects of rug industry might think that this is the end of the rug industry. Rugs of different types have been in existence for millenniums. Mankind needs a kind of floor covering regardless of its name, construction, country of origin and other aspects which may come and go.

There have been many changes in the recent decades in the rug industry and its channels of distribution. Chain and department stores, catalog sales, Internet retailers and virtual auction houses, interior designers, television and satellite sellers, and rug blogs were never part of the game. The construction of rugs has gone under different changes as well as the designs. Rugs which were considered luxury items and investment, are now a consumer product.

Regardless of all these changes which have come into play, people are still using rugs. The players and rules have changed, but the market is still there and will stay there. Whatever role we play in this game, we should never lose hope. We should master the rules of the game and try to learn more about what we do. If we love what we do and if we do what we love, and if rug is our love and passion, then we will enjoy the game and we will play it right. The rug market will never die.

President-Elect Obama and the Rug Market

When Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, insurance giant AIG and Lehman Brothers failed few months ago, everything looked bad and this situation was seized by the Senator Obama's Campaign. Obama won the election with the promise of change. Can president-elect Obama turn the rhetoric and the ideas that won him the presidential
election into policies and implement them correctly to bring the desired changes about?

I am not politician and do not like politics but of course try to follow it to see its effects and consequences on my life. I see from the people who walk into my rug gallery every day that people have high hopes for the right kind of changes to happen. Although the holiday season is approaching and we are almost in the middle of November, people have not really started shopping for the Christmas yet. We have not felt getting closer to holiday shopping in our rug gallery here in Los Angeles. We have not either felt people getting ready to buy rugs or have their Oriental and area rugs cleaned for the holiday traffic.

I am a rug dealer and see and measure everything from a rug point of view and angle. Just wanted to share some thoughts on the new political transition and its relationship to my profession and passion which is rug!!

What A Rug Dealer From Los Angeles Does When the Rug Market Is Tough!

Regardless of what the politicians say, it is economically tough for everyone these days. What I as a rug dealer and rug enthusiast do here in Los Angeles to survive is:

1- I work harder & smarter. (We are open 7 days a week)
2- I try to give more and better services to my customers. (Custom made services)
3- I try to educate my customers and share my knowledge with them. I know a little bit more about rugs than what my customers know. (I give them free books and literature)
4- I do not give them discount. (They make sure my prices are real and not inflated)
