Best Tapestry Repair at Rug Ideas in Los Angeles

We received an antique late 19th century tapestry from a client few weeks ago. It was full of damages and holes. It is made of cotton, wool, and silk. The silk parts in many areas are rotten and when we touch them, become powder and dust. First we identified all the damaged areas by yellow tapes and then we assigned one of our master weavers to work on this beautiful object of French art.

 The damaged areas had to be attached to a wood frame to stretch we could make foundation to start the re-weaving process.

We then began the repair and used different types of silk/wool yarn to re-weave the holes.

This is a lengthy process and it needs a lot of attention, mastery, and patience. We need few more days to finish the job and do the final inspection. In a separate post, I will have the after repair pictures.

Tapesrt Cleaning: Restoration of a Damaged One

In my earlier post, I mentioned a tapestry which was cleaned by a group of wall to wall carpet cleaners. We cleaned and restored this tapestry as much as we could. When a tapestry with cotton foundation and wool face has shrinking problem, there is so much we can do. I am posting few pictures of this tapestry after we worked on it.

Tapestry Cleaning: A poor Job By Unprofessionals

A customer brought in a beautiful tapestry which was poorly cleaned by wall to wall carpet cleaners. It had tens of wrinkles and it had shrunk because of using harsh chemicals. No disrespect, but wall to wall carpet cleaners do not know the fiber and construction of rugs and tapestries. They maybe familiar with the fiber of carpeting which is nylon or olefin. They should not use the same type of chemicals on wool and cotton. Cleaning hand made Oriental/Persian rugs is a totally different specialty.
