Tapestry Cleaning, Tapestry Repair Los Angeles

We cleaned and repaired an 18th century tapestry and installed backing for it and hung it on the wall in one of our clients walls few weeks ago. The tapestry did not stay flat and well on this curved wall so we had to do some on site work and adjustments. I took one of our repairmen to this clients house this morning and did the necessary work and re-hung the tapestry. It took us three hours of work and I was late from another appointment but we had to finish this job to make our customer happy. We could tell to this customer that our job was to repair and to restore this tapestry and hanging and making it stay flat on this curved wall was not our responsibility. But we stand by our work and do our best to make our customers happy and do this with care and love.

Tapestry Repair and Restoration, 18th Century Tapestry

We just finished restoration of big ca 8' x 10' 18th century French tapestry. We are going to deliver and install it on the wall tomorrow. We're all excited that we finished this very difficult job. This beautiful antique tapestry was falling apart when we picked it up from our customer's house. It has wool and silk face and silk parts were rotten and in the process of repair, the silk threads disintegrated and became like dust and powder. The wool parts were in better condition.

It was a delicate job and where ever we wanted o put the needles through to secure was weak and almost
un-repairable. But, we managed to finish it. Tapestry cleaning and repair is a good part of our service department and we have knowledgeable repair crew who do this with love and care.

Tapestry Cushions Repair and Cleaning

We received 25 cushions for cleaning and repair. Out of these pieces, there were few which were damaged and needed repair. One of them was a tapestry cushion cover with a very fine and tight weave. It was torn and damaged and needed repair. We just finished the repair job. I am posting before and after repair pictures here to show the delicate job we did.

Silk or Wool?

It is a mis-conception that silk is more durable and stronger than wool. Once in a while we receive old and antique tapestries for cleaning and repair. In many cases, the wool parts are in better conditions than the silk parts. Here I am posting pictures on a cushion and an antique 18th Century tapestry with rotten silk parts. The wool which is dyed is still intact while the silk (un-dyed) is very weak and rotten and this makes our restoration job much harder. We have marked the damaged areas with safety pins and red small balls so we do not overlook them in our restoration process.

Tapestry Repair Tapestry Restoration Tapestry Cleaning

We repaired a very old, delicate and damaged tapestry. It took us two months to restore it. When we got this antique tapestry it was full of dust, dirt, and mildew. We hand cleaned it and then started the restoration process. We also prepared the backing and installed it for more protection. Tapestry cleaning and repair needs more expertise and patience than cleaning and restoring rugs because tapestries are more delicate and fragile. I am posting a short video clip here which shows before, the process, and after cleaning and repair.

Our customer came in to check the tapestry out yesterday. She inspected the restoration and the whole job. She was extremely happy with the outcome. We have wrapped up the tapestry in special type of thick cushioning wrapping paper to deliver it. Since this 18th century tapestry is very fragile, we have rolled it up around a heavy duty long tube.

Tapestry Cleaning Tapestry Repair Tapestry restoration

After two months of hard work, we finished the restoration of a huge 10' x 14' antique tapestry. We hand cleaned this tapestry and then started its restoration. I assigned two of our master weavers with decades of experience to work on this fragile piece. It is made of wool and silk, but the construction was full of dust, dirt, and mildew. The foundation was rotten in many places. The problem was the fragile foundation and construction of the tapestry. We opened it wide on the floor and at night, we had to roll it up around a very big tube to put it aside. When we opened it the next day, some more and new places were damaged and it added to our work. We could not fold this tapestry and our repair masters could not sit on it to do the work because it would break.

It was difficult to match the color of the wool and silk we needed because the original color/dye was oxidized. Therefore we had to dye the wool and silk to match the color. Maybe I should not mention it here but in some cases we used tea and coffee to dye the yarn!

We did the final inspection yesterday and this morning and took many after repair pictures and videos. We should deliver the tapestry in a few days. I am surprised why this beautiful and huge tapestry did not have any backing in the first place. After we did the restoration, we hand sewed the backing we had prepared for extra support. Eventually, this tapestry will be hung again in our clients home.

You drive around like a pizza delivery guy

I received this anonymous comment on one of my recent posts on tapestry cleaning, tapestry repair/restoration. I don't intend to reply to this comment. It may be from a competitor or someone that I do not care about.

"Sorry, but what kind of life is this you live as an "American-Iranian" in USA? You drive around like a pizza delivery guy, to a bunch of white Americans that has their noses high up in the air, to pick up their carpets. Then you work hard like an animal, trying taking away the piss and shit that their dogs have done in their carpets. I mean, life could have been better at your age. At this age, you still do this? Where do you find your motivation? Especially when the right winged fundamentalist Americans talk so bad, and tell so many lies about Iran. Im from Sweden, maybe thats why i dont like USA. We are very "anti-America" in Sweden, which im proud of. I love Persian carpets, but i would never go to a Persian carpet dealer here and ask him to wash my carpet. I show Iranians in Sweden respect, and only buy carpets of them instead."

Tapestry Cleaning Tapestry Repair and Restoration

We have been working on the restoration of a big 10' x 14' antique French tapestry. Probably 2/3 of the repair is done. I have assigned two of our master weavers to work on this  beautiful 18th century masterpiece. The construction is made of cotton, wool and silk. The foundation of this tapestry is very weak and it gets damaged whenever we wrap and un-wrap it. We will sew and attach a canvas backing to it for extra support. Repair and restoration of old and antique tapestries is one of our specialties.

I spent a couple of hours this Saturday afternoon inspecting the tapestry, taking pictures and videos. I am posting few pictures of the repair here. I will have to post the video later in another post after it is edited.
