Kashan Rugs

A Kashan rug is a type of Persian rug from the area of Kashan. Kashan is a city in Isfahan Province in North Central Iran. There was production of Persian Carpet at Royal workshops in the 17th and early 18th century. Many authors attribute Persian Rugs and Carpet to Kashan in the 16th century particularly of the so-called small silk Kashan Persian Carpet group. The Persian Carpet workshops ceased production in about 1722 after the Afghan invasion.

Historically Kashan was a major center in the garment trade. In the late 19th century the market shifted and the local industry went from fine wool cloth to fine wool carpets. High quality wool was sourced from different parts of Iran and in some cases even imported wool was used.

Kilims

Kilims are flat tapestry-woven carpets or rugs produced from the Balkans to Pakistan. Kilims can be purely decorative or can function as prayer rugs. Recently-made kilims are popular floor-coverings in Western households. Kilims are produced by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands of the weave to produce a flat surface with no pile. Most kilim weaves are "weft-facing", i.e., the horizontal weft strands are pulled tightly downward so that they hide the vertical warp strands.

Because kilims are often cheaper than pile rugs, beginning carpet collectors often start with them. Kilims have become increasingly collectible in themselves in recent years, with quality pieces now commanding high prices. Because kilims were not a major export commodity, there were no foreign market pressures changing the designs, as happened with pile carpets. Once collectors began to value authentic village weaving, kilims became popular. Now, many kilims are woven for export.

Customer Shiraz Rug/Repair

This Shiraz rug came in from a customer and needed a little of our TLC. But first, a little about Shiraz Rugs:

A Shiraz rug is a type of Persian rug made in the villages around the city of Shiraz, in the Iranian province of Fars. The designs tend to come from settled tribal weavers so they mimic Qashqai, Khamseh, Afshar, Abadeh and Luri designs. Since the weavers are using fixed looms the rugs tend to be larger and often coarser than their tribal counterparts. Shiraz rugs are not often very finely knotted, with both Qashqai and Abadeh both having a finer knot. Shiraz utilizes the Persian (asymmetrical) knot. Shiraz is a city in the south west region of Iran, sited practically upon the old Persian Persepolis. Shiraz rugs are not usually made in a large factory, with the majority of them being woven by home weavers and taken into the main bazaar to be sold, most often, to traders who will group a sizeable range of these rugs and sell them to smaller traders or export them.

Notice how in the picture above that the ends had slowly started to unravel. This is bad for the rug as it would have started unraveling into the design and would have lowered the rugs value(and look). It was in need of professional repair.

The picture above shows the Shiraz rug after repairs have been done to both ends. Notice the secure knotting that keep the end fringes together and also from unraveling any further into the design. After the repair was completed a thorough deep cleaning was done to clean, sanitize & deodorize the Shiraz rug and bring back the colors that dust and dirt had muted over the years. It is now secure and ready for many more years of use in the customers home; a great repair job and another happy face from one of our customers!

Tapestry Cleaning, Tapestry Repair Los Angeles

We cleaned and repaired an 18th century tapestry and installed backing for it and hung it on the wall in one of our clients walls few weeks ago. The tapestry did not stay flat and well on this curved wall so we had to do some on site work and adjustments. I took one of our repairmen to this clients house this morning and did the necessary work and re-hung the tapestry. It took us three hours of work and I was late from another appointment but we had to finish this job to make our customer happy. We could tell to this customer that our job was to repair and to restore this tapestry and hanging and making it stay flat on this curved wall was not our responsibility. But we stand by our work and do our best to make our customers happy and do this with care and love.

BNI Business Network International and Dr. Ivan Mysner

I have been a member of BNI Business Network International here in Los Angeles for the past few years. Our chapter is called The Money Makers and we meet every Thursday from 8:00 to 9:30 am for breakfast and networking. BNI is an organization which works based on referrals and has over 140,000 members throughout the world.

This morning, we had a big Power Breakfast meeting at Skirball Cultural Center with hundreds of guests and participants. The keynote speaker was the founder of BNI Dr. Ivan Mysner who talked about networking and gender. He introduced his recent book Business Networking and Sex (Not What You Think) which talks about how men and women are different and what we should do to network with each gender.

This was an interesting half-day networking, educational and fun event. There were several stands and booths representing different members and organizations.

Tabriz Carpet Tabriz Rug Repair Los Angeles

We picked up a Tabatabaei (Taba) Tabriz carpet for cleaning from a client's house two weeks ago. Apparently his dog had repeated accidents on this beautiful 12' x 15' rug for years and when this happens, the yellow stains become permanent and this also results in dry rot and holes in the rug. The stained areas had severe moth damages as well. We first deep cleaned this rug which was contaminated by dog urine. We then reviewed several repair options with the owner and he wanted us to cut and secure the damaged end along the width which we did. We also replaced the binding and the selvage on one side of the rug. The repair took three days and one of our repairmen did this in our workshop adjacent to our rug store. This rug was delivered and our customer was very happy to have his cleaned and repaired rug back.

Rug Pads in Los Angeles

Wondering if you should have a rug pad underneath your rug?There are a number of reasons why using rug pads are a great idea:

Safety - No matter where the rug is placed (on carpet or hardwood or etc), a pad keeps the rug in place to prevent slips and pulls. Rugs, particularly throw rugs and other small area rugs, can easily slip out from under foot and cause falls. This is even more likely if the rug is placed on a very smooth surface such as a hardwood or linoleum floor. A rug pad will "grip" both the rug and the floor.

Protection - A pad prevents dye transfer, marring, staining, and scratching to the floor or carpeting beneath. It is even possible for a stiff or harsh backing to scratch the finish on hardwood or vinyl flooring. A rug pad will prevent the backing from coming into direct contact with the surface beneath it, protecting the floors and the carpeting.

Longevity - Believe it or not, a pad extends the life of your rug by preventing the fibers from being crushed. The pad acts as a type of buffer between the hard surface below and the rug above.

Moth Damage and Rug Cleaning in Los Angeles

Moth damage is caused by the common clothing moth. It's small and is usually silvery tan or soft brown in color. This moth flies slowly but with a rapid flutter of small wings. Flying clothes moths do not eat rugs, but the females do lay hundreds of eggs each, and the eggs hatch into larvae that consume wool and silk fibers. Moths and their larvae thrive in dark, undisturbed areas where a rug gets little traffic and is not often vacuumed. A bad infestation sometimes leaves a cobweb-like veil in the area of the damage, along with fine, sand-like debris. An infestation often involves more than one rug, and can spread to (or from) woolens or furs hanging in a closet or sweaters stored in a drawer.

To prevent moth damage, frequent vacuuming and turning over the rug is critical. Also, we offer a service to our customers with our moth deterrent spraying that can be done after a deep cleaning. The moth spray is a biterant, which carries a taste that moths do not like. 

If you already have moth damage on your rug we can also help revive it by doing moth damage repair. To do the repair, we need to make the foundation. This means making warps (vertical threads) and wefts (horizontal threads) on which we can tie the knots around two warps. This is a very highly specialized job done by our master repair personnel on site as they have to match the weave while considering the knot technique to be the same as the entire rug. Matching color of the new weave and matching the design is another delicate part of the repair. It is an art by itself to repair a moth damaged rug.

Rugs and Fringes: Short or Long?

Rugs have fringes. Should fringes be short or long? How short? How long? This is a matter of taste. We receive rugs for cleaning and repair. Some of the owners of these rugs ask us to trim the fringes at the ends and mention long fringes look ugly and messed up on the floor. Besides, they get stuck in the vacuum cleaners. On the other hand, other customers like long fringes and when we should repair their rugs ask us not to trim the fringes. They mention that long fringes add to the beauty of rugs and rugs without fringes look like area rugs, machine made rug. There are occasional customers who take the matter to the extreme and ask us to cut the fringes completely.

What is my preference on the length of fringes?  I like them not very short, not very long. I believe on inch of fringes, 2.5 centimeters is fine and looks good on the rugs on the floor. It is manageable and adds to the beauty of rugs. What do you think?

Hanging Your Tapestry

Tapestry is a form of textile art, traditionally woven on a vertical loom, however it can also be woven on a floor loom as well. It is composed of two sets of interlaced threads, those running parallel to the length (called the warp) and those parallel to the width (called the weft); the warp threads are set up under tension on a loom, and the weft thread is passed back and forth across part or all of the warps. Tapestry is weft-faced weaving, in which all the warp threads are hidden in the completed work, unlike cloth weaving where both the warp and the weft threads may be visible. In tapestry weaving, weft yarns are typically discontinuous; the artisan interlaces each coloured weft back and forth in its own small pattern area. It is a plain weft-faced weave having weft threads of different colours worked over portions of the warp to form the design.

Sometimes tapestries do not come with what's needed to hang them and that's where we can help. In the picture above we've sewn in a  few inch canvas piece which lines the back top of the canvas from left to right. We've attached rings on this particular piece to hang from hooks that the owner has installed on their wall. We can also do a variation of this technique where we leave space in between top and bottom of the installed canvas where a rod can be installed that covers the width distance.
