Rug Cleaning and Moth Damaged/Infested Rugs

We picked up seven severely moth infested rugs from a public storage in west Los Angeles. Moths were flying in the storage units when we picked up these Chinese rugs. This was by far the worst moth case we had seen in years.

These seven rugs were left in storage without cleaning and wrapping of any kind. It took us several hours to do a preliminary vacuuming to bring them into our shop to take pictures, measure them and process them for a deep hand wash.

The deep cleaning is done now and we contacted the client and offered to do the moth treatment/spray. She wants to store them again and we offered professional wrapping and sealing of the rugs. We should hear from her today.

Hand Washing Rugs at Los Angeles Rug Cleaning

We received this hand knotted Chinese silk rug runner for cleaning and repair of both ends. It was very dirty and stained since it was used in a high traffic area close to the kitchen.

We did the dusting and hand washed it multiple times and brought it back to life again.

One of our repair technicians on site also repaired and secured both ends to make sure knots do not come off.

 Here you see another very dirty runner on our wash floor being washed by hand by two of our technicians. This makes sure stained and dirty areas get more attention.

Moth Season Is Here! Inspect Your Rugs.

We picked up seven moth infested rugs from a public storage. When we opened the fist one, we saw thousands of these little bugs flying and jumping up and down. And the worms were having a big party at the rug owners expense.

Moth infestation happens when a rug is not professionally cleaned and left in storage which is dark and humid. Pet urine on rugs also attract moths.

The first important thing here is to dust and remove all these moths, larvae, and eggs from the rug. Then a deep thorough wash should be done. We apply and spry a repellent solution to moth infested rugs and this non-toxic solution changes the taste of the wool so moths do not come back to eat the wool which is protein as their food.

Professional (not wall-wall type) rug cleaning every couple of years and regular vacuuming and inspection of rugs is very important in having moth free rugs.

Balouch Rug Patch Repair at Rug Ideas, Los Angeles

A client brought in a Balouch rug for repair a few days ago. It had a big hole in it and he wanted us to patch it for him.

The good thing was that he had the patch. Its design and color palette did not exactly match the rug, but this is what he had and this is what he wanted us to use.

This is the patch that our client provided. We used it to patch and cover the big hole.

So one of our repair personnel took care of the patch and fixed it. This is not as fine as re-weaving which we could do for this customer, but this is what he could afford, and this is what he wanted.

In many cases, patching a rug could be a good alternative if customer does not want to spend money on reweaving the hole or the damaged area. Of course one challenge here is to find the right match with the same kind of design, construction, and color scheme. But if customer can lower her expectations, patching could be something to consider.

Rug Samplers, Ornak, Wagireh

In the old days when graph papers were not available and commonly used in remote areas, weavers had rug samplers which were used as guides and the rugs they would like to weave.

Silk Rug Fringe/Tassels Repair at Rug Ideas, Los Angeles

A carpet cleaner sent us a rug which was damaged on the ends in the process of cleaning. The foundation of this rug was silk. He wanted us to fix this for him. His client claimed she had bought this 6' x 9' rug for $11,000!

We received the rug by UPS ground and assigned one of our master weavers to do the job. Sometimes our biggest challenge is to find the right yarn and material to match the color, and the original material/construction of the rug we want to repair.

We did the re-fringing on both ends and the result was very good as it can be seen in these pictures.

We sent the rug back with UPS ground and the client was very happy with the repair as the rug looked like the damage never happened.

The good point about hand made/knotted rugs is that we can almost do any kind of repair and restoration on them.

Big Rugs In Los Angeles: Cleaning, Repair & Appraisal at Rug Ideas

Lately, we have been busy with cleaning different big rugs from different clients. Big rugs are difficult to handle and bring in, so usually we pick them up from our clients rather than them dropping the rugs off.

This was a 14' x 24' antique hand knotted Persian carpet we picked up, cleaned, repaired, and returned to one of our good, repeat clients in Beverly Hills.

We picked up this big 13' x 23' Turkish carpet from a client's penthouse in Los Angeles down town for cleaning and stain guarding.

She wanted to store the rug for a while, so we professionally wrapped it with acid-free paper and sealed it for a long term storage.

Another big fat thick rug which we picked up for cleaning, and moth treatment/spray. Can you imagine how heavy these rugs become after they are wet washed?

This 14' x 24' Indian carpet has been the heaviest of all. We picked this up along with 15 other rugs for cleaning and repair. We need for helper to move this around. It had moth infestation so we had to spray moth guard on the front and back of it before the delivery.

Down Sizing Rugs at Rug Ideas, Los Angeles

We down size rugs very often. There are different reasons for this and I mention few of them here. Sometimes our clients down size their homes and move to a smaller home with smaller rooms and they need to make their rugs smaller to fit the new place. Sometimes, part of a rug is moth damaged and they do not want to pay for reweaving the moth damaged areas, so we down size their rugs. Pet accidents, and stains on some parts of the rugs and getting rid of these nasty stains maybe another reason for some people. Whatever the reason is, we receive many rugs for down-sizing.

We do not use sewing machines and everything is done by hand by one of our technicians on site under our strict supervision.

This customer bought two runners from us and wanted one to be cut to fit the sizes of the stairs landings. We did the measurements, cutting and hand bindings.

Rug Repair in Los Angeles. Sometime Patch Is the Solution

We can almost re-weave all types of rugs and damages. However, re-weaving is expensive as our master weavers have to spend time to match the color, design, and construction of the rug. In some cases, we have done and used patches which are less expensive.

 This Hamedan rug was not financially worth it but our client loved it. She could not afford re-weaving.

 So we patched it and she was very happy with the result.

 This machine made Karastan rug was rotten due to a planter and constant watering. It could not be re-woven as it was machine made, but we could save it and make it look better.

We discussed the patch option and our client liked the idea. So we patched it and he loved the new look of the carpet.

 This was another Hamedan rug brought in by a client. We cleaned it first and then told her about patch option.

We patched it and when she came to pick it up, was very happy. She gave us a Persian Bakhtiar carpet for cleaning. She left with a big smile on her face.
