A Masterpiece Signed Amoghli Persian Mashad Carpet

We have this masterpiece that belongs to a client of ours who wants to sell it. Her house is not big enough for this beautiful art object otherwise she would use and enjoy it.

Amoghli brothers were the early 20th century master rug weavers and producers who had their workshops in the city of Mashad in north east Iran.  They only made rugs based on orders and in many cases these rugs were commissioned for the royal court or noblemen who could afford paying for these master pieces. 

The size of this hand knotted Persian Mashad carpet is 16' x 20' 5" (488 x 622 cm). Both ends and both sides were fixed and hand secured just recently. It was also professionally washed by a reputable rug cleaning company a few weeks ago. This rug has the authentic signature of Amoghli.

Antique Farahan Rug

We received an antique large Farhan (Ferehan) rug from a customer for repair. The size is 18 x 14 and the design is Herati, an old version of today's fish (mahi) design. It is used under a very big and heavy dinning table and the heavy chairs damage the rug which is very thin and vulnerable. The foundation of this magnificient Persian carpet is cotton and the pile is wool. The knots are asymmetrical and it is double-wefted.

Rug Importers in Los Angeles: Leslie and Tom Atiyeh

Last evening before we close our rug gallery, Leslie and Tom Atieyh walked into our store and spent an hour with me and my son Ashkan. Atiyeh family has been involved in rug production and import for more than a century. They are based in Newbury, Oregon.

I met Tom in 1992 in Tehran during the first Persian Carpet Grand Exhibition and Conference for the fist time and we became friends. For many years, we produced fine rugs for them in Iran in different provinces and cities such as Kerman, Shiraz and Varamin. Tom's father, Victor Atiyeh, was the governor of Oregon for two terms.

Atiyeh Brothers produced fine Kerman rugs in Kerman, Iran from early 1900 up to the Iranian Revolution of 1979. They have always cared and loved fine rugs and have nevered lowered the quality of their productions. They are lovely people. We have taken many trips together inside Iran to very remote places. Leslie has been to Iran several times by herself. Once we went to the city of Bam before its destructive earthquake which turned that ancient city upside down in 2003.

Persian Rugs at North Pole

TEHRAN -- Iranian Hamid Jodeiri Khodashenas will be hoisting Iran’s three-colored flag at the North Pole for the first time.

“I will take a fistful of Iran’s soil, water of Mount Damavand, and a Persian carpet with me to the North Pole and will be performing several traditional Iranian ceremonies during my ten-hour stay,” Jodeiri told the Persian service of CHN on Sunday.

Jodeiri who will be accompanied by filmmaker Sassan Tavakkoli Farsani added, “We will set off on July 19 heading to Finland. We will later board an icebreaker at Russia’s Port of Murmansk on July 20, and will arrive at the North Pole - also called roof of the earth - on July 26th.”

He went on to say, “On the way coming back, we will visit Franz-Joseph Land of the Arctic Ocean, Eskimos, polar bears and seals. We will also be observing a solar total eclipse at the North Pole on August first. Several astronomers, geologists and ornithologists will be on board and will also be giving lectures for all the passengers.”

Jodeiri also explained that he is planning to make several movies, take photos and give lectures and prepare daily reports.

Referring to his previous trips to the five continents, he explained, “This has helped me attend several international conferences in various countries.”

He established the Sayeh Research Center that carries out research on total solar eclipses. He is currently working on his largest project in which he follows the path of the eclipse that took place in Africa in 2001, and studies its effects on various species of animals on earth.

Jodeiri, who carries out his research from his own funds, complained that there is no governmental support for projects of this kind anywhere in the country.

Mercedes Benz Logo on Persian Rugs

I received a new shipment of Persian rugs from Tehran while ago. My supplier has sent me a Mercedes Benz logo made on a Persian rug along with other rugs and kilims. The size of this little rug 21" x 16 and the knot per square inch, KPSI is around 300. The pile is wool on cotton foundation (warp). This hand knotted Persian carpet was made in the famous city of Kashan.

Persian Carpet Grand Exhibition in Tehran Aug. 23-29, 2008

The 17th Persian Carpet Grand Exhibition will be held in Tehran Permanent Exhibition Ground from Aug. 23rd to 29th, 2008. More than 400 exhibitors from all over Iran will put their latest produced rugs and kilims on display.

My Persian Rug Lecture at Bowers Museum, Santa Ana, Southern California

Yesterday, I had two lectures on Persian carpets at Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, in south California. The first lecture was at 11:30 am and the second one was at 1:30 pm. We had many rugs on display in one of the biggest halls of the Museum with live rug weaving show which the visitors tried and liked. We also showed a 15-minute documentary on rug making in the Qashqai tribe. The lectures were accompanied by live Persian music of Santour played by an Iranian young lady and daf, a kind of drum performed by a 12-player group.

It was a great day full of education and fun. I will post several pictures of the event later.

It was possible to hold this event by the great kindness and help of Linda Khan, the Vice President of Education in the Bowers Museum. Maryam Molavi, the head of the Persian Cultural Arts Council worked selflessly for many weeks to plan and execute this wonderful event. I appreciate both ladies' enthusiasm toward Iranian arts and culture. In each of the events, we had raffles and I donated a small Persian rug to the winner. The Child Foundation, a non-profit charity was also one of the supporters of the event.

Established in 1994, Child Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization registered in the state of Oregon. Child Foundation's programs currently serve children in: Afghanistan, Indonesia, Iran, and the United States. Almost all of the Child Foundation sponsors live in the United

States.
