These Gabbeh rugs are made by ladies of the Qashqai tribe in southwest Iran with hand spun wool and natural dye. The designs are simple like kids' paintings which gives some a certain peace of mind. Rugs and Sex

Rugs and Sex; it is NOT what you think! By sex I mean gender. I inspected all our sales and rug cleaning documents for the past eight months and found out that 67% of our customers have been female! Does this mean something? I believe it does and that is women are more interested in buying rugs or have their rugs cleaned and repaired, than men. With 67% of our customers being women, that only leaves 33% for men. This is a 2 to 1 ratio!

Us men, when it comes to cleaning, whether it is our rugs or furniture, we are not nearly as detailists as women. I know my wife spends more time at home and I spend most of my life at work. If I am home, I am there to either read books in the backyard, sleep on my bed, or eat in the kitchen. I am not a huge TV person. Believe it or not, I don't spend much time around my rugs at home; I know this may sound odd...

So with that being said, my wife is the one who sees our rugs on a regular basis. If any of the rugs, even the little Gabbeh rug in my youngest son's room is dirty, she would notice it and ask me to have it cleaned. She makes it her responsibility to keep our house as neat as possible and I value that.

Let me know what you think might be the reason that nearly 2/3 of our customers are women and only 1/3 are men.

Rug cartoon and the Design

We have few rug designs called cartoon in our rug gallery to show to our customers to see how Persian carpets are made. A designer draws the cartoon on a graph paper and then a painter paints and dyes the cartoon. Each little square of one by one millimeter stands for one knot. Weavers can only read this cartoon. Usually they cannot follow a rug picture and have to use this cartoon to make a rug.

In tribes and many rural places, weavers use the designs from the top of their head and in some cases they can use their imaginations to add or drop some of the elements and motives. Our Qashqai weavers are allowed to use their creativity and modify the designs of our Gabbeh rugs to some extent.

Persian Rug: Everlasting Garden

It is 7:45 am in Los Angeles and I am at work in my rug gallery in Los Angeles.

I had a lecture and video presentation last night at the California State University Northridge here in Los Angeles on Persian carpets. I enjoyed the program. Around 40 students and one of the faculty members showed up. I showed a 15-minute video of which I am the producer showing how Gabbeh rugs are made in Iran by the Qashqai tribe. The program started at 7:15 pm and ended around 8:45 pm.

History of Rug Making:

Handmade rugs were probably made by nomads to cover the floor. The Pazyryk carpet is the oldest hand made rug which dates back to 2,500 years ago. It is kept in the Hermitage Museum in San Petersburg, Russia. The Ardabil carpets (a pair) were woven during the rein of Shah Tahmasp of Safavid dynasty in 1539. One piece is in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The other one is in Los Angeles County Museum of Art, LACMA.

Rug Trade

Rug trade is around $2 billion per year. Iran holds nearly 30% of the market, India 21%, China 18%, and Pakistan 17%

In 2006, around $120 million Persian rug was imported to the US. Around $600,000,000 Persian carpet is exported annually from Iran. There are around 1,000,000 looms in Iran with about 2,000,000 weavers. Roughly 350,000 people work in the side jobs. Around 8,000,000 Square Meters, roughly 90,000,000 square feet of Persian carpet is produced annually in Iran.
