Rug Repair - Dog Chewing

Last week a customer brought in a couple of rugs, one for which needed a repair done. This particular rug is a small one that the owner's dog had done some chewing on. Take a look below:

The dog in question is a puppy, and they have been known to gnaw on rugs while they are teething. We put our customer at ease when we told her we had a fix that would keep the rug symmetrical. A decision was made to shorten the rug a few inches off the bitten end and put new binding across where we did the cutting. She chose the yarn color from our extensive palate and then we put the rug into the hands of one of our weavers. Take a look at the results below:

The rug now look fantastic and you can not tell it was chewed on by a dog at all. Our customer was extremely happy with the results and we hope her dog doesn't have the same inclinations any time soon. Water Damaged Rug - A Rug Rescue

Last week a customer brought in a rug of hers that had just gone through some water damage. She was away for the weekend and when she returned home, her whole apartment had flooded due to a water pipe breaking. While removing the rug from her living room, she placed it in her backyard. Unfortunately it was not dried flat, so bubbling of the rug occurred. Not only that but it was hard water that damaged the rug so it's texture was very rough/hard. Take a look below:

The owner thought her rug was a complete loss, but we put her mind at ease. What this rug needed was a thorough deep cleaning, which involves a complete wet washing. Cleaning and Repair - Handknotted Rug

We had a return customer bring 4 handknotted pieces in recently to be deep cleaned; one of those pieces needed some extra attention. The ends of the rug in question had major unraveling happening and the design was already being lost. This advanced stage of unraveling needed to be stopped right away so that the rest of the rug could avoid such damage. Take a look at the before pics below:

We first secured the damaged areas so any further damage could be avoided while it was being deep cleaned. After the rug was finished going through our deep cleaning process, we started work on getting the ends into shape. One of our weavers did all the work by hand and the pics speak for themselves. This handknotted rug looks great because of the deep cleaning and also is now strong and secure with the work done to repair the ends. Stain Removal - Kashan Rug

We had an interesting customer story occur a couple weeks ago here at Rug Ideas. A couple brought in a very nice Kashan Rug that had some apparent color bleeding all over the rug(which made the ivory parts pink) as well as a large white stain on the bottom of it. What happened was that the couple decided to wash the rug themselves with household cleansers as it had not been cleaned in a couple years. They wet it in their backyard and once they started to wash the rug they noticed the colors started bleeding all over. In a panic they asked around and searched the internet and heard of a remedy that requires putting yogurt on the rug. The yogurt, however, made a totally new problem and stained the area that it touched. The owners of the rug gave up on their DIY rug cleaning and decided to take it to the experts... here at Rug Ideas! Take a look at the before pics below:

With all the bad news they brought, we brought some hope with our 59 years of expertise. The good news is that they brought the rug in right away once the problem happened. Letting this kind of problem sit means that the bleeding might set in and the damage could become permanent. Stain Removal is what we were going to have to do, but a good cleaning would need to come first. The Kashan rug went through our deep cleaning process, which first requires dusting of the rug to remove and debris that might turn into mud once water hits the rug, then color stabilizers to prevent further color bleeding. It then was completely wet washed using specialty shampoo made just for Oriental rugs. Once it has been thoroughly cleaned and rinsed it dries naturally under the sun. After the cleaning we had to do multiple steps of stain removal to get out the bleeding that occur when the owners originally washed the rug themselves. This process is time consuming and requires light applications, with time to the application to set in, then  further applications to get the ivory color back. Handknotted Silk Rug Cleaning

Sometimes rug owners take cleaning duties into their own hands, with varied results. A new customer of ours recently got a stain on their Handknotted Silk Rug and tried to clean the are himself. Not only did the stain not come out but the washed area started creating a color variation that worried him the instant he saw it. He was so upset at possibly having damaged this expensive piece of art. From one end of the rug it looked like a dark blotch on a light rug and from the other end looked like a bleached out part on a darker rug. We calmed him down and let him know that we would put the rug through our deep cleaning process so as to restore the rugs colors. Take a look at the before pics below:

We thoroughly dusted the rug to remove any loose debris before it was completely wet washed. We use special cleansers depending on the type of rug we are washing, and silk rugs require special attention as well as cleansers that won't damage the fibers of such a nice rug. Kerman Repair - An Inside Look

Today's post shows us an inside glance at just how the magic happens when doing a rug reweave. The Kerman rug in question can be seen below, which show major damage that has happened to one of the corners of the rug.

This damage is major and only could  be fixed with the help of a master weaver. We had one of our master weavers go to work on and we'll even give you a sneek peek of how the process went. A loom had to be created around the damaged area so that the reconstruction could begin. Take a look below:

Rug Water Damage - Cleaning

A water damaged machine made rug came in last week and with it and unhappy owner. Apparently a pipe burst in an upstairs neighbors apt and the resulting flood water damaged the apt below. This rug had been completely saturated by the event and when the owner tried to dry it out, it created bends in the rug as it became stiff and developed mold/mildew. Take a look below:
